While every player is different, you can help your child create a winning mindset by finding a pre-game ritual that works for them. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
RITUAL #1: VISUALIZE SUCCESS
Many players visualize themselves making successful plays, hitting home runs or executing perfect pitches. This mental rehearsal can help boost confidence and focus. Encourage your child to visualize themselves winning or achieving a goal. How does it make them feel?
RITUAL #2: THE PERFECT PLAYLIST
Some players have a specific playlist of songs they listen to before games to get pumped up and focused. Music can help players get into the right mindset and block out distractions. Help your player or team create a pump-up playlist filled with favorites that will get them fired up and excited to play.
RITUAL #3: POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
Want to get in a good headspace before the next big game? Have your child repeat positive affirmations or mantras to themselves to boost confidence and focus. These can be phrases like “I am prepared and ready to perform” or “I trust in my abilities.” Ask if your child would be comfortable determining their affirmation and sharing it with the rest of the team. This may bolster positivity for the entire group, and strengthen their sense of comradery.
RITUAL #4: FOLLOWING A GAME DAY ROUTINE
Many players have a specific routine they follow on game days, from the moment they wake up to the time they arrive on the field. This routine helps them mentally prepare for the game and get in the right mindset. Ask your child what a typical game day looks like for them. How can they make small changes that will prepare them for success?
RITUAL #5 EATING LIKE A CHAMPION
Professional players pay attention to their diet before a big game or practice – and young athletes can do the same. Instead of restricting “bad” foods, encourage your child to eat balanced meals packed with nutrition in the 24 hours leading up to a game. This includes plenty of complex carbohydrates for energy, protein and healthy fats. And, of course, encourage them to drink plenty of water and electrolytes to ensure they are well-hydrated.
RITUAL #6: SETTING A SLEEP SCHEDULE
While many older kids and teens stay up late on their phones, playing video games or watching their favorite shows, it’s important to get plenty of sleep before a big game. Encourage your young athlete to set a sleep schedule as a pre-game ritual to ensure they are getting at least eight hours of solid rest the night before a game.
RITUAL #7: GETTING SUPERSTITIOUS
Finally, some pre-game rituals aren’t based on skill, science or nutrition – they’re just plain superstitious (and a little bit fun). Players might find something they bring to every game (such as a “lucky” pair of socks or keychain) to help them get in the winning mindset. Sometimes even just the suggestion of a lucky charm or advantage can provide the confidence boost needed to win.
POWER UP YOUR PLAYER’S GAME
Not sure which pre-game ritual is most helpful for your athlete? Try out a few (or a combination of several) to see which one feels like the right fit. And remind them that, at the end of the day, it’s not about winning or losing – it’s about doing their best. As your child’s first and most important coach, teaching good sportsmanship is one of the best ways to prepare them for the big game and life.
